Bracket & Voting Questions Answered

Here you can find written instructions on how to fill out the bracket.

Here you can watch video instructions on how to fill out the bracket.

Students must fill out their brackets prior to the start of the tournament.

The brackets are so they can predict who they think will win.  The voting determines which songs advance to the next round.  It is a single elimination tournament, just like the NCAA basketball tournament.  Unless the students have a perfect bracket, song matchups in later rounds will not all be the ones they predicted, so they may not be voting for songs they originally picked.  This keeps them engaged in the process until the end since their vote helps determine who wins.  Think of the voting as the “games” in the NCAA tournament.

That is completely up to you.  Always screen lyrics and videos to make sure they work for your audience, although all should already be school appropriate.

Try going to the Playlist page on the website and use the “lesson” on the bottom of the page. This should allow students to watch the video within the lesson, using the side arrows to advance to the next video. IF this does not work, you may have to download each video and add to a Google Drive folder that is accessible to your students.

Total votes will be submitted by teachers via Google Form which will be linked on the password protected section of the teacher Padlet.  The password will be mailed to registered lead teachers prior to the start of voting.

  • Only French teachers from registered, verified schools may submit votes.  (Exception:  Registered retired teachers may submit one vote.)
  • Never give students access to the voting form.  It is for teachers only.
  • Multiple teachers from one school may submit student votes separately provided that they ensure that no students vote more than once in each matchup (if a student is in two French classes, for example).  Alternatively, the lead teacher may submit all the votes for their entire school for each matchup.  You choose!
  • Individual teachers are responsible for collecting all their student votes and submitting only one form. If a student is absent on a voting day, you decide how to handle that.  WE CANNOT ADD VOTES LATER. Once you submit your form, that is your final count for that matchup.
  • If you missed the registration deadline, you can still play along and have your students vote in class.   Please do not ask us to add you as a registered participant after the deadline.

Votes run for two days. Votes close at 8:00 p.m. EST on the second day of the vote. This is firm.

  • To provide a little more flexibility and to simplify things for the admin. team, we will open the Google Form for the following vote shortly after the previous vote closes. For example, if match #3 closes on Tuesday at 8 p.m., the vote for match #4 will likely open by 8:30 p.m. that same Tuesday and remain open until 8 p.m. on Thursday. So even though the voting window says Wednesday/Thursday, it will actually open the night before. (No need to confuse students with this info!)
  • Please make note of time zone differences and plan accordingly.
  • Worried you’ll forget to submit your votes? Set an alarm reminder for yourself an hour before voting closes!

We suggest having students submit the completed bracket to the teacher. If students have completed the bracket on paper, teachers can make copies of the brackets for accountability purposes before returning the brackets to students so that points can be tallied. You might even REQUIRE students to use PEN or marker so changes can’t be made. If students complete the bracket electronically, students should submit a screenshot of the bracket to teachers prior to voting for accountability.

Absolutely! However, you will have to remind your students to vote on the off days. Only one match up is available on our site per day. Alternatively, devise your own voting system using our bracket.

Yes. However, you will have to submit your students’ votes during the voting window if you want your students’ votes counted in the official tally. This will mean you will have to collect their votes either prior to or during your break. Alternatively, you can devise your own voting system and timelines using our bracket.

Nothing. We will have enough votes from elsewhere to ensure there is a contest. Failure to vote just means they have no say in the outcome (just like an election!).

That is completely up to you. Perhaps they share the prize, if there is one, or you could ask them a musical trivia question as a tiebreaker.

Contest Questions Answered

Mais oui! We strive to have songs that will appeal to all audiences on the playlist. Of course, it is always a good idea to know your audience and screen for yourself.

We “collect” potential songs all year and also ask for suggestions in our teacher-only Facebook group. Our screening team reviews the nominations for language and content, then makes a draft list of potential contenders. After that, we look at balance - musical styles, where the artists are from, male & female singers, etc. It is a very intense and time-consuming process!

Bien sûr! In fact, this can really increase engagement if you are remote. It’s up to each teacher to determine which parts they want to make “live” (in person) or remote. Do what works for you & your students!

We do not offer prizes for winners in individual schools; that is up to each participating teacher. However, we do offer prizes for winners of our side contests such as our yearly talent contests. There are also some teacher prizes if you join the teacher challenge! Please see the teacher page of our website for details.

If allowed, treat the lyrics like poetry and have your student express opinions and do analysis of those. You could also have them research the countries the artists are from, or explore the basketball side of Manie. There are vocabulary lists available for basketball terms, a chat mat on comparing Manie to March Madness, and a slide show of francophone basketball players.
